- Summited Mt. Everest on May 23, 1997, during his third Everest expedition
- His first expedition (1991) missed the top by 3,000 vertical feet; his second (1994) by two city blocks when his team decided to rescue a critically ill teammate rather than continue for the top
- three years after summiting Everest, at the age of 42, was diagnosed with acute leukemia (cancer of the blood) and given less than a year to live
